How durable are porcelain veneers?

Posted on December 6, 2016 by admin in veneers

veneers DentonPorcelain veneers are wafer thin, tooth colored shells that are placed on the front side of teeth that can offer both cosmetic and tooth strengthening capabilities. Porcelain is an ideal material as it is stain resistant and appears very natural.

Porcelain veneers are considered very durable, but they are not invincible. Just as your teeth are strong, patients should never use them or veneer treated teeth to open packages, bite fingernails, or chew hard objects like ice or rock candy.

Porcelain veneers can resolve many dental maladies such as …

Deep intrinsic stain – when teeth are stained or discolored, veneers can cover one or more teeth. Illness, medications, or lifestyle habits like smoking can result in spots, stains, or dull teeth.

Chipped or broken enamel – Porcelain veneers offer a minimally invasive option to repair teeth.

Uneven or misaligned teeth –Worn down teeth can create an uneven appearance; veneers can make your smile appear more symmetrical.

Unwanted gaps – Spaces between teeth can appear to close in a couple of dental appointments without years of alternative care.

The process is fairly simple. The dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from the front of each tooth requiring repair (about the thickness of the veneer itself – this will allow an even, natural appearance after the veneers are cemented in place).

Dental impressions are taken and sent to the lab for the veneers to be fabricated. In about two weeks, your dentist will try on your veneers for fit and function. Any small adjustments needed can be completed at this time.

When satisfied, your veneers will be permanently cemented in place. Each treated tooth will have received a permanent cover on the front that is durable; and with the advances in cosmetic dentistry the enhancements are so natural no one will know that you have undergone a cosmetic dental procedure.

Caring for your dental veneers is as easy as caring for your biological teeth … brush twice daily with a fluoridated tooth paste, floss, and visit your dentist every six months for cleaning and dental exam.

You will enjoy a long lasting, durable smile makeover with your new porcelain veneers. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Withers Dentistry at 940-293-2635 today.

Our Response To Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Although the Governor has rescinded the mask mandate, as a Dental Office we are subject to protocols of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). The TSBDE has not lifted its COVID 19 emergency protocols, so masks are still to be worn by patients and staff in the dental practice. We will be continuing all of our COVID safety protocols and respectfully request all patients, staff and vendors wear a mask in our office. Thank you for helping us keep the safest environment possible for our patients and staff.

Please contact our office if you have any concerns.
