Lost Back Molar: Is a dental implant an option?

Posted on June 10, 2016 by admin in dental implants

Denton dental implantsThe standard make up of adult, permanent teeth includes three molars per quadrant. The third molars are the ones further back in each quadrant and are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. The remaining two molars (eight in total) serve a crucial purpose; so if lost for any reason, replacement is important. Dental implants are an excellent option for patients who qualify for the procedure.

The role played by molars is just as important as any of our teeth. The primary exception is third molars. For many patients, wisdom teeth add to an already crowded jaw, pushing existing teeth. This often results in crooked, misaligned placement. Or if space is insufficient, these teeth can become impacted resulting in discomfort or even infection. Extraction of the third molars is often recommended.

However, the first and second molars are important for chewing and keeping the rest of our teeth in alignment. If one or more of these molars are lost, remaining teeth could shift to the open spot creating a malocclusion. And without an opposing molar tooth, chewing on that side of the mouth is difficult.

A dental implant is a small titanium post that would be surgically placed in the spot previously occupied by a molar tooth. A temporary protective covering is added while the implant area heals and the bone in the jaw has a chance to integrate with the post. Once the post and bone have merged, the implant will become a permanent part of the dental anatomy providing the strength and stability to hold the restoration firmly in place.

The restoration will be made to match surrounding teeth in shape, size, and color. When the temporary is removed, an abutment is attached to the implant allowing for the restoration to be permanently affixed.

The final result is a tooth replacement that is so natural, you will soon forget that it is not your biological tooth. The appearance will match neighboring teeth so you will be able to smile with self-confidence. There are no concerns with slippage or movement allowing you to speak freely. But the best part is your ability to chew will be restored making all foods easy to consume once again.

Care for your implant includes brushing and flossing daily; and seeing the dentist every six months just like you did before tooth loss occurred. Contact Withers Dentistry at 940-293-2635 today to discuss your options!

Our Response To Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Although the Governor has rescinded the mask mandate, as a Dental Office we are subject to protocols of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). The TSBDE has not lifted its COVID 19 emergency protocols, so masks are still to be worn by patients and staff in the dental practice. We will be continuing all of our COVID safety protocols and respectfully request all patients, staff and vendors wear a mask in our office. Thank you for helping us keep the safest environment possible for our patients and staff.

Please contact our office if you have any concerns.
