Do Dental Implants Require Special Care?

Posted on June 9, 2014 by admin in dental implants

Denton dental implantsDental implants easily improve the quality of life and overall functioning when natural teeth are lost or damaged beyond repair. Dental implants require the same diligent oral hygiene habits as natural teeth to prevent inflammation or other issues from arising. When preparing for the dental implant procedure, dentists provide the necessary guidance to ensure patients are aware of the proper care instructions and procedures for maintaining a healthy mouth with implants.

As with natural teeth, brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day is strongly recommended. The use of non-abrasive or low-abrasive toothpaste is essential to prevent scratching or damaging the protective finish on the dental implant or prosthesis. For this reason, most whitening toothpastes are discouraged when caring for dental implants as the whitening toothpastes typically contain strong abrasives to scrub surface stains from natural teeth.

Dental implants require the same diligent oral hygiene habits as natural teeth…

An interdental toothbrush, sometimes referred to as a “go between” brush, can be used to remove food particles and plaque. Water irrigation is also recommended but not mandatory, and dentists recommend using a non-metal water irrigation tip to prevent damage or injury with use.

A rubber-tip stimulator can help keep gums healthy and firm, keeping the dental implant components secure and looking nice. Most dentists recommend using a rubber-tip stimulator along gumline and around teeth and the dental implant at least once daily to ensure a good blood flow through the gums and reduce inflammation, irritation, bleeding, and other common gum tissue problems. These rubber-tip stimulators are Latex-free, reducing potential problems with allergies.

Engaging in diligent oral hygiene habits such as these will keep the dental implant looking and feeling natural for a long time. In the event of minor inflammation, an antimicrobial oral rinse can be used to reduce risk of infection and encourage the decrease of inflammation. This can be combined with a salt-water rinse regimen, alternation throughout the day or as instructed by a dentist.
