Healthy Dental Habits to Follow

Posted on August 6, 2013 by admin in dentist

We all want to have a healthy, attractive smile. Our smile is one of the first things others notice about us, and so its appearance can have a profound effect on our self-confidence, as well as others’ perceptions. In order to keep our teeth looking at their best, it is important to maintain a good dental health regimen, and to visit the dentist regularly!

Regular brushing with a good toothpaste, and coupled with dental flossing and the use of a mouthwash are important steps in the prevention of cavities and maintaining the cleanliness of the teeth. By brushing teeth regularly, we are removing plaque from the surface of our teeth, as well as food debris which can rot and create bacteria in our mouth which in turn can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Dental flossing helps to remove trapped debris from between the teeth that a brush might not be able to dislodge, while rinsing with a mouthwash also helps to clean the difficult-to-reach areas and wards against bad breath.

Dentists advise brushing teeth at least twice a day, especially after meals and at bedtime. Where brushing isn’t possible, chewing gum can help to stimulate saliva in the mouth which helps to keep the oral cavity clean, by rinsing away bacteria from the surface of the teeth and around the gums.

Maintaining a healthy diet can help by cutting down on harmful sugars which can attack the surfaces of the teeth by interacting with plaque to form acids. These acids can erode the tooth’s protective enamel, leading to cavities. Drinking plenty of water can help to keep the mouth hydrated, rinse away impurities and avoid dry mouth, which can include bad breath among its symptoms.

And of course, making regular visits to the dentist for a dental check-up can help to identify any potential problems with the teeth or gums, and allow the dentist to identify and treat issues before they become exacerbated. A professional cleaning, where plaque and tartar is removed from the surface of the teeth, and below the gumline, can help to guard against cavities and gum disease and help to keep the smile looking at its best.

The dentist can also advise on other matters of dental care, from effective homecare and hygiene through to cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and more – so it pays to keep those dental appointments at regular intervals!
